YWCA was first established in Geelong in 1872, as a group of women who met in a chapel in Ryrie st.
YWCA was started by a group of women who
- Saw a need and acted
- Were not afraid to take risks
- Who dared to be different
And it is still represented by such women today! As a membership organisation, YWCA rely on women joining up and becoming part of a global movement to improve the lives of women. YWCA Victoria prides itself on its advocacy, social housing and community programs.
In the nineties YWCA Geelong became part of YWCA Victoria and moved towards a Community Programs model. In the past 15 years YWCA Victoria has become a vibrant state-wide community organisation committed to the equality and opportunity of women.
Over the years the YWCA in Geelong has played an active role in employment schemes and training for women, with an historical focus on “Life skills” that is still apparent in community programs today. With support from Give Where You Live in 2013 we have been able to update the furniture in our program room, with new chairs and tables that are safe and comfortable. The room is used by YWCA Victoria Geelong for programs such as Women @ Work, Y’s Women, LEAP, Be Your Best, Girls Boxing and Y’s Mums. Other community groups can also hire the venue, current users include PFLAG, Body Shop @ Home, Barwon CASA and Zena. The program space has a warm and creative feel to it and is available to hire for meetings or classes at a reasonable rate.
