The Smith Family’s Let’s Read initiative is an evidence-based literacy program designed to encourage parents to read with children. The program is based on research that has proven pre-school aged children (birth to 5 years) who engage in reading at home, are more likely to commence schooling with an advanced literacy skillset.
Unfortunately, for those children affected by disadvantage in our region, there is a high risk of falling behind in literacy and language development.
Thanks to your donations, a $30,000 grant supports The Smith Family to strengthen reading and literacy skills within the communities of Corio, Norlane and Whittington.
Helen, the Coordinator of the Northern Bay Family Centre in Corio has seen the long-term impact the Let’s Read Program has on children. The program aims to ensure a better chance of beginning their education at the same level of their peers. “Reading is a great way to build a child’s skillset as they get ready to transition to the next stage of their life – towards kindergarten and primary school.”
Delivered by trained Community Professionals, the program also provides parents with the necessary resources and information to assist them at home.
“We have a lot of disadvantaged families in Corio and Let’s Read allows them to experience reading and learning with their children, and then take home that experience. Before long, they start putting reading routines in practice, because the feedback from their children is amazing.” said Helen.
With your donations, the Let’s Read initiative can continue the provision of important early learning resources and ensure disadvantaged children in our region have the greatest chance at a successful transition into their schooling.
